Thailand prepares plan to deal with potential human transmissions of bird flu

The government said it has prepared an emergency plan to deal with a potential outbreak of human-to-human bird flu transmissions.
Deputy premier Chaturon Chaisaeng said the government committee supervising attempts to control outbreaks of the deadly virus has come up with a multi-million-dollar, three-year strategy aimed at saving lives in the event of such a crisis.
´There will be a stock of 100,000 doses of flu medicine, 10 million masks and preparation to produce vaccines and the preparation of bird flu testing equipment,´ Chaturon told reporters.
The 776 mln baht scheme is needed because such an outbreak would likely kill some two million Thais, said Chaturon, without indicating how the government had arrived at the estimated death toll.
´We are deeply concerned about human-to-human transmissions, which would be very dangerous, and it is close´ to happening, Chaturon told reporters, adding the latest deaths in Vietnam had added weight to the government´s concerns.
Bird flu claimed two more victims in Vietnam Saturday with five other deaths announced last week.
Chaturon said Thai health and livestock officials will fly to Vietnam in the next few days to help provide that country with assistance.
´If this happens in Vietnam, it will definitely affect Thailand as we are one of the two countries where people have died from the outbreak,´ he said.
At least 12 people have died from avian flu in Thailand, which has gone on high alert after more outbreaks of the disease were reported this month.
The Thai contingency plan will also involve emergency measures for theatres and public transport, said Chaturon.
