Malaysia declared free of Bird Flu

The first ever outbreak of HPAI H5N1 was on 17 August 2004. The outbreak occurred in northern part of the state of Kelantan which is bordering Thailand, involving village chickens. Subsequently, 8 more outbreaks occurred and 2 detection of HPAI virus were made in the same state. On 19 November 2004 virus Avian Influenza H5N1 was detected from surveillance sample within 10 kilometers radius of outbreaks area. The last Avian Influenza virus (19 November 2004) detected was low pathogenicity based on egg inoculation study. Stamping out policy was adopted to eradicate the HPAI infection. All chickens, ducks and birds within 1 kilometer radius of outbreaks and virus detection foci were culled. The farmers and owners of the chickens, ducks and birds were compensated. The premises and surrounding areas were cleaned and disinfected. The last culling and disinfection were completed on 22 November 2004. Since last culling and disinection no more new cases or virus detected. In accordance to Article 2.1.14.13. of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, the state of Kelantan in Peninsular Malaysia is considered no longer an HPAI infected zone.
