New outbreaks:

The total number of infected provinces is 15, comprising 98 districts.


Description of affected population in the new outbreaks: layer hens and Arabian chickens.

Diagnosis:


A. Laboratory where diagnosis was made: Disease Investigation Centre Region IV, Yogyakarta.


B. Diagnostic tests used:


- haemagglutination inhibition test;


- pathogenicity test.


C. Causal agent: highly pathogenic avian influenza virus type A, subtype H5N1.


Epidemiology:


A. Source of agent / origin of infection: local contamination.


B. Other epidemiological details: Kediri and Grobogan were previously infected districts but had not reported cases since January 2004.


- The new cases in Kediri occurred in July-August 2004.


- The new cases in Grobogan occurred in September 2004.


Control measures during reporting period:


- quarantine;


- movement control inside the country;


- modified stamping-out;


- vaccination;


- zoning.
