Avian Influenza surveillance in human Bureau of Epidemiology on October 6, 2004 at 6:00 P.M. had received the reports of 432 influenza or pneumonia patients from 52 provinces in the avian influenza surveillance network since 1 July 2004 (details in annex). Central: Three each from Angthong, and Prachuapkhirikhan, 2 from Sakaew, and 1 each from Bangkok Metropolitan, PranakhonSiAyutthaya, Saraburi, Ratchaburi, Suphanburi, Nakhonpathom, Chachoengsao, and Rayong.
North: Eight from Phetchabun, 2 each from Pichit, and Kampaengphet, and 1 each from Chiangrai, Pitsanulok, NakhonSawan, and Uthaithani.
Northeast: Two each from Buriram, and Amnatchareon and 1 from Khonkaen.
South: One from Pattani.

*Patient definition:
1. Suspect : Individual who has body temperature over 38 degree and one of these symptoms; muscle pain, cough, breathing difficulty, or shortness of breath, or the physician suspicious of pneumonia or influenza plus history of direct contacting sick or dead poultry within the last 7 days or unusual dead of poultry in the village within the last 14 days,
2. Probable : suspect case with preliminary laboratory result of influenza A infection but strain not known either human or avian influenza yet or respiratory failure or dead,
3. Confirmed : suspect case with final laboratory result indicated influenza A (H5) of which is avian strain by PCR or by virus culture,
4. Excluded : any patient who is not compatible with the aforementioned definition or laboratory result prove to be other causes.
5. On investigate : any patient, whose additional data or information either clinical or contact history in risk area are needed before any conclusion could be made.
