Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Thailand said it detected bird flu in four more provinces, bringing to 34 the number of provinces where the disease has reappeared since July, the government said.
Thailand, Asia´s second-biggest poultry exporter, confirmed bird flu in the provinces of Roi Et, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima and Rayong and Yala, the Livestock Department said on its Web site today. The Southeast Asian country has 76 provinces.
The government said on Sept. 28 Thailand probably had the first case of human-to-human transmission of the bird flu virus. A Thai woman died from avian influenza on Sept. 20 after visiting her daughter, who may also have died from the virus.
Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Sept. 29 said he will fire a deputy prime minister, the health minister and the agriculture minister if the avian influenza virus isn´t eradicated in a month.
The Thai government today will begin ordering as many as 1 million officials and volunteers from the Agriculture Ministry, Health Ministry and other agencies to inspect all villages in Thailand for possible bird flu infections in fowl and humans, state-owned Radio Thailand reported today.
The government has culled 825,000 chickens and other fowl since July in an effort to stop the spread of the virus. It killed about 60 million fowl between January and April. Thailand was Asia´s biggest poultry exporter last year.
