Avian Influenza surveillance in human
As at September 24, 2004.
Bureau of Epidemiology, Department of Diseases Control, Ministry of Public Health
Bureau of Epidemiology on September 24, 2004 at 6:00 P.M. had received the reports of 140 influenza or pneumonia patients from 31 provinces in the avian influenza surveillance network since 1 July 2004. The preliminary investigation results summary are as follow:

Note: Five cases are excluded today: Four cases: one each from Ratchaburi, Rayong, Prachin Buri and Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, showed influenza A not H5; and one from Lopburi, showed no Avian influenza virus genetic material; hence, cumulative total of excluded cases are 128.

Reports of Avian Influenza in poultry from Department of Livestock Development web site. (www.dld.go.th)
Since 3 July - 21 September, 2004 at 3:00 P.M.
1. Suspected areas of outbreak foci : 22 foci in 15 provinces.
2. Laboratory confirmed avian influenza outbreak area: 149 foci in 30 provinces;
2.1 Northern part: Chiang Rai, Sukothai, Uttaradit, Nakon Sawan, Kampangphet, Uthaithani, Pitsanulok, Pichit and Phetchaboon.
2.2 Central part: Pathum Thani, Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya, Lop Buri, Sara Buri, Ang Tong, Suphan Buri, Bangkok Metropolis, Nonthaburi, Chainat, Chon Buri, Chachengsao, Nakon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Samut Prakhan and Rayong.
2.3 North-Eastern part: Nong Khai, Khon Kaen and Loei.
2.4 Southern part: Narathivas, Songkhla and Nakhon Si Thammarat.
3. At present, there were 55 foci of surveillance areas, and 116 foci in 27 provinces had complete 21 days of surveillance.
*Patient definition :
1. Suspect : Individual who has body temperature >38°C and one of these symptoms; muscle pain, cough, breathing difficulty, or shortness of breath, or the physician suspicious of pneumonia or influenza plus history of direct contacting sick or dead poultry within the last 7 days or unusual dead of poultry in the village within the last 14 days,
2. Probable : suspect case with preliminary laboratory result of influenza A infection but strain not known either human or avian influenza yet or respiratory failure or dead,
3. Confirmed : suspect case with final laboratory result indicated influenza A (H5) of which is avian strain by PCR or by virus culture,
4. Excluded : any patient who is not compatible with the aforementioned definition or laboratory result prove to be other causes.
5. On investigate* : any patient, whose additional data or information either clinical or contact history in risk area are needed before any conclusion could be made.
