Cambodia: one case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus reported from Svay Rieng Province

From 24 to 30 April 2026, one new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus was reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region. The case is a 66-year-old female from Svay Rieng Province, Cambodia, with symptom onset on 15 April 2026. She was admitted for treatment and passed away on 22 April 2026. The case had a history of tuberculosis treatment. She had exposure to sick and dead poultry at home prior to symptom onset. Further investigations are underway, and no additional cases have been reported to date. From 1 January 2003 to 31 March 2026, a total of 484 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus have been reported from six countries within the Western Pacific Region (Table 1). Of these cases, 320 were fatal, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 66.1%.
