Cambodia: A fatal case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) reported

From 10 to 16 January 2025, one new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus was reported to WHO in the Western Pacific Region. The case is a 28 year-old male from Kampong Cham Province, Cambodia, with onset of symptoms on 1 January 2025. The case had exposure to poultry at a farm where he worked as a guard; There were reports of sick poultry in the farm. He was hospitalised on 7 January and passed away on 10 January 2025.
From 1 January 2003 to 12 December 2024, a total of 261 cases of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N1) virus have been reported from five countries within the Western Pacific Region (Table 1). Of these cases, 142 were fatal, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 54%.
