Affected population: 39, 54, 69-week old Novogen laying hens in 3
houses. An up-to-date prophylaxis protocol against the main avian
diseases including low pathogenic avian influenza was applied.
Epidemiology
Source of the outbreak(s) or origin of infection: unknown or
inconclusive
Epidemiological comments: deaths occurred suddenly, with high
mortality and morbidity reported in all poultry categories. The
disease spread at an unprecedented speed. Risk factors such as poultry
gatherings at sale points or fairs for the end-of-year celebrations,
as well as the Harmatan, may have made the health situation worse.
Control measures at event level
Domestic control measures applied: stamping out, screening,
disinfection, disinfestation, official disposal of carcasses,
by-products and waste, official destruction of animal products,
quarantine, movement control inside the country, surveillance outside
containment and/or the protection zone, surveillance within
containment and/or the protection zone.
Wild control measures applied: control of wildlife reservoirs,
screening, official disposal of carcasses, by-products and waste
