Epidemiological comments
In the first affected holding, 47 596 turkeys have been kept in 12 pens. In one of these pens, where 3 900 9-week-old turkeys were kept, on the 2nd and 3rd of January, a drop in feed and water intake, and on the 4th of January, increased mortality rate and watery diarrhea have been observed. In the other holding 36 976 turkeys were kept. On the 4th of January in this holding, the drop in feed and water intake has been observed. From the two holdings, samples were taken and sent to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) on the 4th of January. The highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 strain was confirmed on the 6th of January. The epidemiological investigation is ongoing. The most likely source of infection is wild birds. The virus isolation and the phylogenetic examination are ongoing.
