Epidemiological comments
One highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus belonging to the 2.3.4.4 B clade has been detected in a wigeon (Mareca penelope) sampled after being shot in a hunting area in the province of Venezia (Valle Drago, Jesolo) and in a common teal (Anas crecca) sampled intra vitam after being captured in the province of Venezia (Valle Figheri, Campagna Lupia). The HA sequence is closely related to those of HPAI strains currently circulating in Northern Europe. Characterization of the full genome is in progress.
