Thailand: Avian Influenza surveillance in human, as at July 30, 2006

I. Avian Influenza in human situation 2006
Since January 1, 2006 to July 30, 2006, the Bureau of Epidemiology has received reports of influenza or pneumonia cases in Avian Influenza Surveillance Network from the Provincial Health Offices and Disease Prevention and Control Regional Offices. The investigation and analysis were summarized as follows:
  1. Cumulative number of patients under surveillance are 1,960 cases; 67 provinces. Today reports are 45 cases. Fifteen cases from Sukhothai, 8 from Phitsanulok, 7 from Suphanburi, 6 from Prae, 3 from Nakhonphanom, 2 from Phetchabun, and 1 each from Nakhonnayok, Uttradit, Phichit and Khonkaen.
  2. Confirmed human case of avian influenza 2005 = 5, 2 death cases;
    ·   2 cases from Kanchanaburi with one death case,
    ·   1 from Nonthaburi/Bangkok Metropolis,
    ·   1 from Bangkok Metropolis,
    ·   and 1 death case from Nakhonnayok.
  3. Confirmed human case of avian influenza 2006 = 1 death cases; from Phichit province. The patient, 17 years old male, resident of 132/1 moo 11 Tambon Thap Khlo, Thap Khlo district, Pichit province. His onset was on July 15, 2006 with fever, cough and headache. He admitted in the Thap Khlo hospital on July 18, 2006 and refered to Phichit hospital on July 18, 2006. He died on July 24, 2006. He had a history of contacting 10 dead chickens while burying the carcasses with bare hands, 7 days before the onset. All 3 household contacts and 37 medical personnels had no signs and symptoms develop.
  4. In 2006, there is no suspect case reported.
Conclusion:
·   In 2005, there are 5 confirmed human cases of avian influenza, with 2 death cases.
·   In 2006, there is 1 confirmed human dead case of avian influenza.
·   No patient from man-to-man transmission reported.
