AVIAN INFLUENZA IN CAMBODIA
Information received on 13 April 2006 from Dr Sen Sovann, Deputy Director, Department of Animal Health and Production (DAHP), Phnom Penh:
Report date: 13 April 2006.
Reason for immediate notification: re-occurrence of a listed disease or infection in a country or zone/compartment following a report declaring the outbreak(s) ended.
Identification of agent: highly pathogenic avian influenza virus subtype H5N1.
Date of first confirmation of the event: 23 March 2006.
Date of start of the event: 20 March 2006.
Nature of diagnosis: clinical and laboratory.
Two outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported in:
1. Tuol Prich village, Moha Russei commune, Kong Pisey district, Kompong Speu province.
Number of animals in the outbreak:
susceptible: 700
cases: 402
deaths: 402
destroyed: 200
Affected population: backyard chicken.
2. Kamakor village, Samlanh commune, Angkor Chey district, Kompot province.
Number of animals in the outbreak:
susceptible: 247
cases: 76
deaths: 76
destroyed: 171
Affected population: backyard ducks and free-ranging ducks.
Laboratories where diagnostic tests were performed:
- National Animal Health and Production Investigation Center (NAHPIC);
- Pasteur Institute of Cambodia.
Diagnostic tests used: RT-PCR(1)
Control measures undertaken:
- modified stamping out;
- disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s);
- movement control in affected areas;
- surveillance around the outbreaks.
